SLAC

Silverton Library Advisory Council (SLAC)

The Silverton ISD School Library Advisory Council (SLAC) was established by the Board of Trustees to ensure that our school library provides strong collections that support student achievement, meet state standards, and reflect community expectations. Meeting at least twice each year, the SLAC works with library and district staff to develop a recommended list of library materials for procurement, including donated titles. The Board reviews these recommendations, considers any proposed changes, and makes the final decision to approve or reject the materials. At least 30 days before the Board’s vote, the proposed list is made publicly available for parents and community members to review. The SLAC also recommends procedures for handling challenges to library materials and reviews challenges according to law before making recommendations to the Board. This process helps ensure transparency, parent involvement, and a strong library program that strengthens student achievement while nurturing a lifelong appreciation, habit and love of reading.

Library Resources

Texas SB 13 requires districts to provide parental access to school library catalogs. Please see our Library Catalog search found under Departments > Library > Library Resources on the Silverton ISD webpage or use the following link: Library Catalog Search

Request for Denial of Book Access

Texas SB 13 also requires districts to develop a process by which parents can submit a list of library materials that their child may not be allowed to check out or access. Once the district receives and processes the request, students will not be allowed to check out materials on that list.

Parents/Guardians may submit a request to prohibit book check out in the following ways:

  • Online: Submit a request online by filling out the following form:  Request to prohibit book check out
  • In Person: Submit a request in writing with the following information: Date of request;  Parent Name; Student Name(s); Prohibited Materials including Title of Book(s),  ISBN number(s), author(s); and Reason for denial. Deliver your request to the office, Attn: Kristin Gordon, during regular school business hours.

You will receive confirmation of receipt after your submission is processed. If you have questions about the form or the process, please contact Kristin Gordon, kristin.gordon@silvertonisd.net, or 806-639-6300 for assistance.

Proposed Titles for Library Procurement List

This form is used when a parent, guardian, or community member would like to provide feedback on a book the district is considering purchasing for the campus library. The ISBNs are not yet part of the library collection. Completing this form informs the district's procurement review process, during which the SLAC examines the feedback of the proposed title and makes a recommendation to the school board regarding whether the book should be approved for purchase and added to the campus library catalog.
